Alternate Project Morphology v.3

Primary focus on transportability via rolling or carrying. Seat is still the activator for the shading device.

Project 1 | Gathering in Parramore

Project 1 | Gathering in Parramore
Trevor Boyle

A large push in the community development meetings was the idea of voting for small items in the master planning. In these meetings, residents, business owners and community leaders were able to place stickers in the category that represented their choice, and this created a very visual indicator of what was wanted. These popular choices included single family housing, better street conditions for walking, and more infrastructure/amenities, amongst many other things.

The idea for this project is to create viable gathering areas for the enrichment of the community. These will be connected to create a system of walkable streets and nodes which sustain a variety of activity to draw residents along these paths. The programming of these areas are necessary to put together the base structure, because that is what will drive the scale of the constructs. Shading materials and other various items will completely dependent on the resident’s needs and desires. Each resident team will be given a package containing the materials need to be supplied by the teams. This is for the purpose of generating unique structures which the teams can feel pride from their own design in their own neighborhood. These are completely bottom-up designs. Residents will be able to suit these gathering areas to their specific needs for the specific sites. Nothing will be forced upon the residents to use, instead they are given the materials needed to define their own spaces for their own purposes. These are small structures, so no license is required. There are small constructs for individual uses or clustering for growth, medium and large kits as well.

Gathering Dematerialized

Shading Devices for Gathering
Community improvements via social interaction & meditation

The investigation started with a documentation of successful gathering locations already established within the district. A few were selected to be studied and their components broken down. By drawing out the shading device and shadow, they can be directly related to the positioning of the occupants to determine inhabiting parameters. The goal is that the success of these existing locations can be brought to new installations to spread the meditative/social experience across more of the community.

A method for creating shade within these structures would be to essentially fill them up with balloons. If the balloons are connected to a tank at the base, then the amount of shade can be controlled by deflating and inflating the balloons as needed.

The intended sites for the interventions are City-Owned vacant plots of land.

Activity Nodes in Parramore

01. Node Documentation
The following is the sequence if images through the district. Gathering areas within the public realm were documented for analysis. A common theme is grouping around the entrance of a local business, with local patrons spending time together in the shade of the building. Public parks were a close second. In this case, the public benches under the 408 overpass along Parramore Ave is being counted as a public park, even though it is simply a shaded area not originally intended for gathering.

02. Mapping
The active spots within the community were plotted by location and meeting place. These areas were translated into nodes and overlaid on top of several maps. Each node is accompanied by an average comfortable walking distance of 1/4 mile (as estimated by Jarrett Walker). The maps were divided into property types to look for patterns which could emerge from the location of activity with neighboring areas. The maps are broken down into residential zones, community-focused areas, and City of Orlando owned property. Property information gathered from Orange County Property Appraisers website.
